A small geography of listening

The Hushwater Walk

Six peculiar neighbors. Seven speaking tubes.
A different town at every listening place.

Walk anywhere, close a tube, follow a voice. Nothing to win; no correct way to leave the town. This is a silent soundwalk—its sounds are written, not played.

HUSHWATER · FOOTPATH MAP
The six clearings of HushwaterAn illustrated town around a winding river. Gold lines are speaking tubes; dotted paths are always open for walking. The walker carries a red lantern.

Take a turn

At 01 · Bell Orchard

Use arrow keys in these controls, or choose a place below. Footpaths stay open even when a speaking tube is shut.

Welcome. Your red lantern is in the Bell Orchard.

Beneath the footpaths

Doors for a voice.

Hushwater’s neighbors are always making their little sounds. These seven shutters decide which speaking tubes connect them. Close a shortcut and a voice may take the long way around. Close every way out and it cannot reach you.

A separate system: your feet travel on the dotted paths. Shutters never trap the walker.

Three invitations, not assignments
  1. A detour for rain. Stay in the orchard, follow Rain, then close tube 01—02. The direct route disappears; another remains.
  2. A private clearing. Close 01—04 as well. Only the orchard’s own bells have a route here. The rain is still being made.
  3. Elsewhere, the same town. Walk to Rain House without reopening anything. Then spotlight Bells. Changing location, changing connections and changing emphasis are three different acts.

Speaking-tube shutters

Numbers match the clearings above. All tubes are undirected and cost one step. Equal-length routes use a fixed, arbitrary tie-break.

Take the listening home.

The last 48 visited places only. Undo remembers 80 changes. Nothing is saved when this tab closes.

Make a fresh slip to record this place, these shutters and this spotlight.

Local records, not importable saves. Walking or changing a shutter or spotlight clears the old slip. Looking closer does not.

About the walk · sources, inventions & limits

What travels from the sources?

Taking ‘brain waves’ seriously: Neuroacoustics (2017) proposes looking at activity together with the medium it travels through. Johnson discusses the topology of connected resonant chambers and adaptive wave–substrate interactions. The essay presents a working ontology and explicitly speculative extensions, including a proposed periodic table of brain regions; this walk does not establish them.

In his October 17, 2024 Note on cognitive security, Johnson speculates that different ways of disconnecting from a stimulus have different consequences. He distinguishes, among other possibilities, altered timing and attention elsewhere. The complete Note also includes social conjectures and possible future technology. Those are not findings established by this app. The modest question borrowed here is: what exactly changed when something stopped reaching the foreground?

What belongs only to Hushwater?

Every neighbor, illustration, voice, tube, footpath and rule is invented. Closed tubes remove graph edges; a voice has a route if its clearing remains connected to yours. The displayed distance is the fewest open tubes. The spotlight only selects which reachable voices are emphasized—it does not simulate human attention. Footpaths are an independent, always-open network. Moving the walker changes the listening location, not the town.

This is not a wave simulation: there is no phase, interference, resonance, realistic attenuation, adaptive substrate or physiology. Counting routes cannot measure consciousness, wellbeing or a person’s boundaries. It is not health advice, a diagnosis, or a meditation exercise. No mechanism is ranked as emotionally or morally better. Missing a route does not erase a source.
