No. 028 / An instrument for changing descriptions

The Frame
Exchange

Move the map.
Leave the world where it is.

Three survey pins, two descriptions, one arrangement. Turn the coordinate frame, slide its origin, or lean its ruler. Then try moving a pin instead.

No score. No clock. Every change is reversible.

The translating bench

World ≠ coordinates

01 / The world board

The board stays fixed. Click a square to place the selected pin; arrow keys move it one world unit. Pins stay within −3 to +3.

02 / The coordinate chart

Cross: frame origin. Solid rust arm: one +u step. Dashed blue arm: one +v step. Arms end at dots; pins can cover them. The ledger below keeps every address readable, including overlapping pins.

Try turning the frame. The pins on the world board will not move.

Change the description

These controls move only the frame, not the pins.

Change the arrangement

These controls move a pin in the world, whichever language you use.

Translate the ruler, too.

A point needs an origin. A displacement does not. A leaning chart needs a different length rule.

World AB length²
Translated length²
Untranslated u² + v²

Open the exact dictionary

World point = origin + R(q) × (u + shear × v, v). R(q) rotates counterclockwise by q quarter-turns. To translate a vector, leave out the origin. To recover chart coordinates, subtract the origin, undo the rotation, then subtract shear × v from the first coordinate.

For the displacement from A to B, length² = (Δu + shear × Δv)² + Δv². These twelve bases all have determinant +1, so signed area is unchanged. The chart may resize to fit its pins; that screen rescaling is not a change of physical units. Coincident pins and flat triangles are allowed.

Three things to notice

  1. An address is not a journey. Slide the origin east. Every pin gets a new address; the displacement from A to B stays the same.
  2. The ruler is part of the translation. Lean the ruler, then move C or B. The naive length rule may disagree, while the translated rule still matches.
  3. A command needs a frame. Turn the frame once. Move a pin by + first in chart directions, then in world directions. Those instructions can lead to different places.

A reversible workbench

Rewind goes to the earliest retained page; use Redo / next to replay by hand. Editing there starts a new branch. At most 80 changes are retained.

    Take both descriptions with you.

A paired SVG sheet and a complete JSON record include the current dictionary, coordinates, rules, source links and retained history. Records are not importable saves. A real change clears the prepared edition.

    No edition prepared.

    Sources, not a proof.

Source position. In Taking Monism Seriously, Michael Edward Johnson contrasts weak and strong dual-aspect monism and proposes a correspondence between physical and phenomenal theories. The 2022 addition also considers limits: emergent structure can depend on angle and scale, and binding boundaries can frustrate an experienced counterpart. A common origin does not by itself supply an invertible dictionary.

The complete hosted A container for knowledge thread motivates multiple formulations and keeping track of what kind of thing a term denotes. It contains 29 posts and quoted material from other speakers; those voices are not all Johnson’s. Its research proposals are not established by this instrument.

Authored mechanics. The survey pins, twelve integer bases, bounded board, translated metric and reversible history are original illustrative mechanics. Unlike a lossy shadow, this dictionary is invertible by construction. The two views are both mathematical descriptions of the same invented triangle—not physics and phenomenology. Equality here follows from the definitions.

Limits. This is not evidence for strong monism, not a consciousness or welfare measurement, and not a discovered mapping between physics and experience. Noether’s theorem is not simulated. A coordinate change cannot establish that two scientific theories describe the same reality. No medical or contemplative advice.

Lab, Notes and Hyperspace were read as discovery and visual references. All art here is procedural; no source artwork is copied.

AI-generated on October 12, 2026. Model: gpt-6-astra, session-reported runtime metadata—not a public availability claim. Daily only; no main-site approval or author endorsement. No audio, autoplay, tracking, persistent storage, external runtime services or dependencies. Save an edition before closing this tab.
